Pashupatinath Temple is also known as Pashupatinath Mandir is a Hindu Temple dedicated to God Shiva. God Shiva is also known as Mahadev (great god). Lord Shiva has incoutable name so his one of the name is Ananta(uncountable). Lord Vishnu used to worship God Shiva with 1000 names and everyday with one thousand lotus flower with each name (one thousand name of god shiva is also known as Shiva sahasranam). One day lord shiva hide one lotus flower. And lotus eye god lord Vishnu says that is my eyes not similar to lotus flower than lord shiva stop and shows his appearance. At that time world was full of demons then lord shiva boon lord Vishnu Sudarshan chakra from which all world is protected.
Pashupatinath Temple is situated in Kathmandu, Nepal. Scripture like Puranas, Vedas mentions Lord Shiva as Astmamurti, meaning the 8 forms of Shiva. They are Bhava, Sarva, Rudra, Pashupati, Mahadev, Ugra, Bhim, and Ishan.

God Pashupatinath has a total of four visible faces. Whereas the upper part of all four faces (head) is worshipped as Ishan(one among Astamurti). So Pashupatinath is considered and worshipped as 5 faces God. Himbawat Khanda mentions the history of Lord Krishna’s arrival in Pashupatinath. And said to be Krishna has talked directly to Pashupatinath south Mukh(Face). The Pashupatinath south face name is Aghor (one of the names of God shiva in shiva sahasranama/1000 names of god shiva).
Pashupatinath is one of the oldest God Shiva temple in earth.
Pashupatinath is also believed as Bhulinga. Meaning the Bhu(earth) and Linga(idol of god shiva). Pashupatinath is also known as self appeared god from the earth.
There are two famous interesting stories about the origin of Pashupatinath. God Pashupati one of the stories is related to the god Brahma and Vishnu. And another story is related to the cow name Kamdhenu.
The quarrel between Lord Brahma and Vishnu
– Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu was quarreling and fighting saying that I am bigger than you. I came first. At that time Shiva came with huge lingas with light (jyotirlinga) and said anyone who will find the beginning and end of this shivalinga, he will be great. Lord Vishnu went down and God Brahma went up to search shivalinga origin. But Both could not find it even in 1000 years. Lord Vishnu returns and prays shiva. But Brahma tells lies and bring flower ketaki and Kamdhenu cow to reveal that he has seen it. After it shiva curse Brahma(not to be worshipped), ketaki flower(not used in shiva worship), and kamdhenu cow(not to be used milk in shiva puja/worship). Lord Vishnu get boon that he will be worshipped everywhere.
Story of kamdhenu Cow
– There is also a story of lord Pashupatinath and kamdhenu cow regarding the origin of God Pashupati. There was a farmer. He has many cows. One of the cow name was kamdhenu who always used to offer milk in plain land every day. The farmer was curious about why she did not give milk. So one day the farmer went back of the cow to see where she go. The farmer saw a cow offering milk in plain land. Farmers of that time dig the land where Kamdhenu cow has offered milk. The farmers found the brighten shivalinga(idol of god shiva). It is said that all person died on the spot due to lack of power to handle light and brightness (jyoti) of shivalinga. when all people turns into ash or become bhasma the light of shivalinga started to threaten the all three worlds. After the appearance of shivalinga it is said that Lord Vishnu, Brahma, Indra, and all gods comes here and pray shiva and establish four faces and hide the light of shiva linga. All Gods prayed for a long time with the “Om Namah Shivaya” mantra(hymn). When God Shiva is pleased, God shiva shows his appearance in front of all gods and boons various kinds of boons to all gods. All gods reside inside pashupatinath. Regarding the farmers, it is believed that they achieve Kailash(home of god shiva).
Aghor is the south face name of Pashupatinath. In scripture, it is said that among mantra “Aghor mantra” is also the favorite mantra(hymn) of lord shiva. God Shiva another and main favorite mantra is “Om Namah Shivaya”.
Vamdeva is the north face name of Pashupatinath. The north face is also known as half God Shiva and half Mother Parvati(wife of god shiva). This face is also known as Ardhanarishwor(ShivaParvati). In this Face, we can see a half-moon on the shiva side(right) and typical folded hair on the mother Parvati side(left).
Saddojat is the west face name of Pashupatinath.
Tatpurush is the east face name of Pashupatinath. In shiva Gayatri Mantra we also find “OM TATPURUSHAYE VIDMAHE MAHADEVAYA DHIMAHI TANNO RUDRA PRACHODAYAT”.
Ishan is the 5th face name of God Pashupatinath who is worshipped at the upper part of all four head (right angle). Listen to all five face mantra (hymn)
It is believed that the Pashupatinath Shivalinga/idol of god shiva is made with paras stone which is a very rare kind of stone. Daily very strict worship to God Shiva(Pashupatinath) is carried out every day.
Inside the Pashupatinath temple, the camera is not allowed along with leather items like leather belts, jackets, any kind of shoes, using a mobile phone. Please be aware of pickpocketers if you are wearing valuable ornaments. Save your bag and wallet. It is one of the most crowded temples especially on Monday(shiva day) and Saturday(a public holiday).
Main Festivals – Some of the main festivals celebrated at Pashupatinath are Shivaratri(night of shiva), Shravan Monday, Teej festival, Ekadashi, Krishna Ashtami, Bala Chaturdashi, Nag Panchami, Saraswati puja, Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, Ganesh Chaturthi, every Monday, etc.
Entrance – Westerners are not allowed to enter inside the main temple of Pashupatinath but western visitors can roam surrounding areas and ghats by purchasing 15$ ticket.

Pashupatinath temple timing – God visible or temple gate open in early morning 4 am. Closes at 2 pm. Again open at 5 to 7 evening for arati(ritual). Online darshan is not available because using the phone, taking pictures/video is not allowed inside Pashupatinath temple.
Bagmati River – In front of Pashupatinath Temple there is a holiest river which is the name Bagmati River. The Sanskrit word bag means mouth and it is believed that when lord shiva laugh, from the spit of the God Shiva. The River got originated. The river origin from up part of shivapuri hill known as Bagh dwar (local name – from the mouth of tiger (bagh). Regarding the story of Bagmati river when lord shiva laugh happily by seeing god Brahma the sacred and holiest Bagmati river originated. Bagmati Ganga is able to remove all kinds of sins. There is presence of Ganga, Saraswati, and Gauri Laxmi in the Bagmati river. Lord Shiva also said that when kaliyug comes, after some thousand years of spending kaliyug all goddess will take their adobe in the heavenly kingdom of god shiva, till now goddess has to stay as Bagmati river. And they remove all kinds of the sin of their devotees by bathing and taking some drops of water.
