Japa Mala – Importance of having 108+1 Beads in Japa Mala

Japa means Chanting and Mala means Garland/Rosary. Japa Mala is known as garland or rosary made up of holy beads used in chanting Mantra. Mantras are hymn and name of God. The most used and famous Japa Mala are Rudraksha Japa Mala (God Shiva and every god), Tulsi Japa Mala(god Vishnu), Sphatik Japa mala (goddess Gayatri), etc.

Rudraksha Mala, Tulsi mala, Sphatik mala etc is also used for wearing.

There is a very interesting story of having 109 Beads in Japa Mala. Lord Krishna also says I am Japa Yagya among yagna (sacrifice to god). Hence, there is no anything great than doing Japa. There are also different types of chanting like in heart (very good), by moving mouth slowly or making low sound with mouth and making a sound. Hence the first one is considered to be very good.

It is said that the heavenly kingdom of God is beyond earth, nine planets like home of god vishnu, god shiva. It is said that the home of god is sumeru and meru parvat which means very top. So end bead at Japa mala end Japa process and this bead is known as Meru or Sumeru. So usually rudraksha mala has 108 +1 (meru/sumeru/also brahmagath) is equivalent to 109.

Hence when we multiply 9 planets with 12 Rashi god (twelve zodiac sign god) sigh = 108. So at Meru (Sumeru) all japas (chanting) end. So it is 109.

We should only choose any types of Japa Mala like Rudraksha Mala which has 109 beads (Complete bead).

We should move/ rotate mala (garland) 2-3 times after ending our Japa.
